Sometimes they have accompanied us for many years. We then hardly consciously perceive them because they feel familiar and self-evident.

Such deeply rooted convictions are called beliefs. They influence how we think about ourselves, how we judge certain situations, and what decisions we make. Some beliefs strengthen us. Others can lead us to make ourselves smaller than we actually are.

Beliefs often operate unnoticed

Beliefs don't develop overnight. Many already form in childhood. Children absorb statements from their environment particularly intensely – especially when they come from parents, teachers, or other important caregivers. Perhaps you heard sentences like:

"You have no talent for that."
"You always have to do your best."
"You're not allowed to make mistakes."
"Money corrupts character."

Not every such statement automatically leads to a negative belief. However, if it is frequently repeated or linked to an emotional experience, it can become deeply ingrained.

The behavior of other people also influences us. For example, a child who had little say might develop the conviction that their own wishes are not important. Someone who was often criticized or rejected might eventually believe they are not good enough or not lovable.

The difficult thing is: At some point, we no longer recognize these thoughts as adopted convictions. We take them for the truth.

My personal experience with beliefs

I, too, carried beliefs with me for a long time that held me back.

As a child, I often heard the phrase: "You do what we say. Period."

I had to do what was expected of me. Even with very personal decisions, I was told what was right for me – right down to the question of who I was allowed to be with.

As a result, I learned early on to put my own wishes aside. I got used to adapting instead of openly expressing what I wanted. This conditioning accompanied me into adulthood. For a long time, I found it difficult to give a clear answer to a simple question like "What do you want?"

This became particularly clear in my marriage. I had a fixed idea of what a happy family should look like: a shared house, a garden, a pool, a dog, and children growing up with both parents. I clung to this image for a long time.

In doing so, I overlooked or accepted many things that were not good for me. Closeness, affection, and a genuine feeling of partnership were missing for a long time. We increasingly lived alongside each other instead of with each other and did not make important decisions as a united team. Even within the family, I felt more and more alone and not taken seriously.

Nevertheless, I did not fundamentally question the situation for a long time. I believed I had to persevere to keep the family together. I kept pushing my own needs further and further back. I spoke too little about what hurt me, set hardly any boundaries, and accepted behaviors that I would no longer tolerate today.

My desire for an intact family was so strong that I clung to the external image, even though I became increasingly unhappy within this relationship. I had learned to adapt and prioritize the wishes of others over my own. Exactly this old pattern repeated itself in my adult life.

After the divorce, I initially convinced myself that I had failed. In my mind, I had not managed to keep my family together. Only with time did I understand that a family is not intact simply because everyone lives under the same roof. A shared home does not replace closeness, respect, or a genuine partnership.

After I moved out and met new people, I began to look at my previous situation with more distance. I realized how much I had accepted over the years just to maintain an idea that hardly matched my actual life situation anymore.

With the support of other people and by engaging with Stoicism, I began to question my previous convictions. I realized that the end of a relationship does not automatically mean personal failure. Sometimes ending an unhappy phase of life is not a failure. Sometimes it is the first step to taking responsibility for one's own life again.

Writing down my wishes and new beliefs helped me particularly. This forced me to consciously deal with questions I had often suppressed before:

What do I actually want?
How do I want to be treated?
What constitutes a respectful partnership for me?
What boundaries do I want to set in the future?
Which convictions truly belong to me – and which have I adopted from others?

This process didn't change everything overnight. But it helped me to get to know myself better and to gradually develop a new image of myself.

Today, I find it easier to express my wishes and say what I want. I have understood that my needs are no less important than those of other people. And today I recognize more quickly when I am about to put myself aside just to avoid conflicts or maintain a certain idea.

I don't succeed equally well in every situation yet. But I notice that my own voice is becoming clearer and clearer.

What we believe influences our behavior

Our inner convictions act like glasses through which we view ourselves and the world. Two people can experience the same situation and yet react completely differently to it.

Imagine two people are given the opportunity to take on a new task. One thinks:

"I've never done anything like this before. I'm probably not good enough for it."

The other says to themselves: "I don't know everything yet, but I can learn it."

Both do not know at this point how it will turn out. Nevertheless, their inner attitude influences whether they seize the opportunity, how they present themselves, and how they deal with difficulties.

Those who are convinced they are not good enough may hesitate longer, avoid challenges, or give up more quickly. As a result, they later lack precisely those experiences that could prove the opposite.

This creates a cycle: A belief influences our behavior. Our behavior leads to certain results. And these results then seem to confirm the original belief.

Why we often only see what fits our worldview

Our brain has to process countless impressions every day. It cannot give equal attention to everything. Therefore, it sorts and evaluates information based on our past experiences and expectations.

For example, if we are convinced that we always have bad luck, we primarily notice those situations where something doesn't work. The many small things that go well, on the other hand, we hardly perceive.

The same applies to the conviction that success is reserved only for others. Those who think this way may primarily see their own obstacles and overlook opportunities, support, or progress already made.

This does not mean that we only imagine difficulties. Rather, it means that our attention is never completely neutral. Our inner attitude influences what we perceive and how we classify it.

Recognizing limiting beliefs

The first step is not to immediately get rid of every negative thought. First, it's about noticing it at all.

Pay particular attention to sentences that frequently appear in a similar form:

"I can't do that."
"Things like that never work out for me."
"I'm just not disciplined."
"My wishes aren't that important."
"Others know better what's good for me."
"I have failed."

Such thoughts can indicate a deeper belief. It is helpful to write them down and then examine them more closely.

For example, you can ask yourself:

Is this thought really true in every situation?
Where do I know this sentence from?
Is it my own conviction or have I adopted it from someone else?
What experiences seem to confirm it?
What experiences contradict it?
Would I speak to a good friend as harshly?

Often it turns out that a thought is not completely wrong, but formulated too generally. Perhaps a relationship has failed. However, that does not mean that you as a person have failed. Perhaps you made a wrong decision. It does not follow that you are fundamentally incapable of making good decisions.

Beliefs can be changed

Deeply rooted convictions rarely disappear just because we have recognized them once. After all, they often developed over many years. It takes time, new experiences, and above all repetition, for a different perspective to develop.

Exaggeratedly positive sentences that you don't believe yourself won't help. Someone who feels internally worthless will probably not get much out of telling themselves every morning: "I am the most successful person in the world."

A new formulation should be encouraging, yet credible.

From: "I can't do that."
can become: "I can't do it yet, but I can learn it."

From: "My wishes are not important."
can become: "My wishes deserve to have as much space as the wishes of other people."

From: "I couldn't keep my family together and therefore failed."
can become: "A separation doesn't make me a failure. I can acknowledge that some relationships end and still start a new life."

And from: "Others know better what's right for me."
can become: "I can find out for myself what life suits me."

It's not just the new sentence that's crucial. Concrete experiences that support it are just as important. Every time you express your opinion despite uncertainty, set a boundary, or make your own decision, you collect a small piece of evidence that change is possible.

Positive beliefs don't mean sugarcoating everything

A strengthening inner attitude has nothing to do with ignoring problems or convincing yourself that everything will always turn out well. Life remains unpredictable. Some situations are difficult, unfair, or painful.

The difference lies in how we deal with them.

A strengthening belief can be: "I can't control everything, but I can decide how I react to a situation."

This attitude does not diminish the significance of difficulties. However, it reminds us that we are not completely at their mercy.

Beliefs alone do not determine our lives. Our prerequisites, our environment, and external circumstances also play an important role. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to question one's own convictions. Because they influence which possibilities we even consider and which path we trust ourselves to take.

Perhaps you don't have to change everything immediately.
